BIBLIOTHERAPHY
Do you remember the story of The Ugly Duckling? a story of a baby bird that was born in a barnyard living together with a group of ducklings. He was mistreated as he looks different from the others. To his surprise, he matures into a beautiful swan, the most beautiful bird of all. The story is beloved around the world as a tale about personal transformation for the better. It is like a gift for those that feels they are ‘different’. Reading this kind of fairy tales, children not only learn that every cloud has a silver lining, but also teaches them to cope, understand and feel the emotion of the character in the story and relate it to their own feeling. By doing so, they have a bigger picture on what they should feel and do when they are in the same situation with the character.
Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed.”(G.K Chestorton)
Kids love fairy tales just like how we do when we are at their age. Undoubtedly, fairy tales affect lives of everyone since in early age. It played an important role in the life of any children all over the world where fairy tales becoming a stimulant to children’s imagination, hopes and dreams in chorus helps them to develop their cognitive. various fairy tales were made as a medium of moral value and indirect behavioral teaching to children as it is the reading composition that were written meant for them, apt to their needs and ability to cope and understand. For instance Pinocchio, children will learn that they shouldn't lie and always be honest. Just like Pinocchio, many other fairy tales are stereo typically came up with the lesson on how bad actions will cause bad consequences. At this point, they learnt that they should always practice good manners because bad manners would only led to bad consequences as what was underwent by the character in the stories they read.  Children learn a lot from listening and reading fairy tales so do us, adults. We learnt from the character we read. It helps in developing children’s character as it connects to our own experiences, lives, dreams and our consideration of what we would do in their shoes. Through this, it helps the readers to navigate their life. This is how reading and listening to fairy tales are best at becoming a medium of moral deliverance to children and simultaneously helps in the building of children character.
This is how fairy tales functioning more than just for the sake of entertainment alone, it helps the kids to understand their life better and helps them to make a move. This is how Bibliotheraphy work. Bibliotheraphy is a therapy that uses written material to help individual to process difficult situation and changes in lives. It cannot be denied that it is not easy to really understand what is in kids mind and what they really feel. We adult always forget that, not only us; children are also going through depression and indulged in pressures in their daily life. They just can’t expressed their feelings well.
Separation, divorced parents, being abused, bullied and isolated by friends, these conflicts happened around them all the times that it gives bad impact to the children’s emotion. In United States, almost half marriages end with divorce and separation. When the relationship doesn’t turn out well, and their egotistical dominating their rationales and decisions, finally led to unsolvable, separation and divorce are seen as the best way to both parents. Left the children’s feelings abandoned. Children’s turn out to be the victims. Most of the kids are unable to express their feeling, they are too small to cope and understand the situations. The changes in lives, with having two family and houses, two sets of rules and other changes due to divorces can be too much for them to bear. Even worse, some children even blame themselves for what happened. It’s important to remember what divorce looks like and feels like from the perspective of a kid.  They couldn’t understand the situation yet. They only believe that no one really understand and care about their feelings. Therefore, at this stage, they really need helps to encounter the feelings and situation. Since communication between adult and children are not very well effective at this stage, Bibliotheraphy can be an alternative medium to help them to feel better.
Through Bibliotheraphy, the children are given books that are related and appropriate to the situation or conflict they are in. For example a book about dealing with parents separation are given to a children that facing the same situation ; through the reading, it can help the children to label out, express and validate his or her thought and feelings by identification of character’s life situation and apply it to their own life. Bibliotheraphy provides a superficial discovery on kids feeling about divorce and all good goes with it. After reading it , they can discuss about the emotion of the character and relate it to their own. By doing so, they will also develop insight, let go their emotion and they will be able to seek out appropriate problem solving method and make it an inspiration for them to move on. Through Bibliotheraphy they will start to cope, understand and heal. Children will gradually understand that they are not the causes for the separation and they cannot fix it.  They will slowly be able to accept the fact and look on the bright side of it. Thus, make them even bolder and rigid. They can understand that thing happen for reason and the decision was decided for the best. This will not only create a bold and confidence character in children but will become a good lesson for them that they must have a better marriage life in the future as they know how it feels to be in a broken family.

Bibliotheraphy are usually done with assist and supervise by adult such as skilled librarian, teacher, reading therapist or parents. It can be done to individual or in a group. Bibliotheraphy is very functioning in building character in children. Through the implementation of this therapy method, it helps the kid to release the emotional pressures. This not only helps them to regain composure after imbalance emotional states, but also built a healthy character and mind in them. Bibliotheraphy also helps the children n to enhance self awareness and self concept in them. Other than that, reading a material that suits and understand what they feel, helps to foster awareness that they are not alone and they are not the first or the only one encountering the same problem. Through this a bold and strong character can be built in them. They start to be rigid and tough in confronting difficulties in life that demands their rationality and wise consideration. Apart of becoming guidance for children as it gives them a bigger picture on what is best to do when confronted a similar situation in life, Bibliotheraphy can be an encouragement for them to move on.  They will build strong and firm stand that the life changes all the time and everything that happened is not an end to their world.

As Bibliotheraphy are usually involving participation of more than one person, interaction among the children and the guider can be really helpful in building character in the children. In Bibliotheraphy, children are encouraged to discuss their problem freely with the teacher. They feel appreciated when there are people willing to listen to their problem. After that, the discussion will be on figuring out variety of solution to the problem. Children are introduced with multiples ways to encounter the problems. They also guided to plan realistic and constructive resolution to the problem they are encountered. This kind of interaction helps a lot in building character in children. Discussion makes them feel appreciated. They would be freer to share their thought and feeling. Opposite of this can cause depression to the children as they feel isolated and abandoned. Bibliotheraphy method can helps them to gain self-control and help them to release their emotional pressure in a healthy way. Discussions will stimuli themselves to encounter and resolve the problem. This will create a character that will work their best in resolving problems that might come to them, create a person that wise and calm when encountering a crisis, and also they will not be depending on others to solve their problem. They will do their best to resolve problems they are facing.
Meanwhile in education context, Malaysian education system is very dynamic. It goes through changes and adjustment from time to time to cater for the need of the stakeholders. The system definitely needs the cooperation and contribution from all parties to ensure its effectiveness and success. The parents have the obligation to provide quality children that they sent to school every year. The learning standard of the children varies and thus required more effort from the school in order prepare them for the learning process.
In this process, Bibliotheraphy can be an effective tool to build the children’s character in school. It has the strength to broaden and deepen the child   understanding of the situation around them. Children come from different family background. Those who have a happy family with stable financial status would have a focus mind to get involved in the learning process. Provided with proper school attire and beautifully groom they would be able to mix and play with the other children with high feeling of self worth. For the unfortunate children who come from broken family, poor or low income group, their mind would be less focus or confused. They would feel very unstable and low self esteem. This would create resistance within themselves and thus avoiding the learning process.

Amongst the children, Bibliotheraphy can be used to build confidence and self esteem. It helps to normalize a child’s world by providing coping skills and minimizing their feelings of isolation, reinforcing creativity and problem solving. Through the process of connecting the children with written words or the content of books Bibliotheraphy would be able to shift their feeling of unworthiness to a better state of self confidence. The content of the books that tell them stories which are very closely related to their situation would create a feeling of relief when they learned that others have had the same problem and have coped successfully with it.

In short, Bibliotheraphy is a very good medium and alternatives to help students making their moves. It’s not easy for adult to understand that children have their own perspectives on one thing as it may different to our view. They do not have lucid and highly- rational view on a conflict surrounding them as they cannot understand it well. They tend to feel left out. Therefore, by reading related situation story it can help to give them a bigger picture of what they are going through and what they can do about it. Bibliotheraphy providing a superficial exploration to children’s feeling about the problem and crisis they are in. through Bibliotheraphy, it build bond and connection between the children to the character in it. Hence, it is very crucial that the materials used are appropriate and suitable to the children’s needs. The books must have a good guide and ending. Negative story plot and moral values can cause bad effects to the reader.

To sum up, Bibliotehraphy implementation is a very good alternatives and approaches to help children processing and adapting to difficulties situation and changes that occur to their lives. It is not only offering deeper exploration to the children’s feeling, it also can become a very good motivation and encouragement for them to move on and to look for best solution to resolve or assimilate to the conflict happened. But still, wrong implementation with no professional guidance can lead t to wrong way. Therefore, parents and adult should never rely 100% on the books to understand their children’s feeling. They are just kids that impacted by life pressures, our helps and willingness to always be there is very crucial to help them confronting the conflict and pressures they are in. for children, the best and warm helper help for them is when adult start to realize that they still needs them to be with them in going through lives journey. The best remedial will always loves and attention to the.  Communication and attentions from people around can be the best tools to help them untangle conflicts that drowning their emotion. In a word, it is undeniable Bibliotheraphy is effective in helping children to figure out what happen and that they are not alone, but children is a human that need more than books to communicate and help them out from the pressure that they aren’t able to cope with, and that is what the best remedial which adult can do adult but always forgot.

My sample essay on - The Absence

@ 10:04 | 0 Comment [s]

THE ABSENCE

“She’s dead. Your sister is dead”.
Stunned. I couldn’t move my body. My heart beat slows down. The world felt sunken to the fact that my sister is dead. I wanted to cry out loud but my promise to her silenced me. I won't cry. Despite my sadness, I felt relieved her agony is finally over.

Looking back, it has been 2 years since Ally left us. I can still feel her touch wiping my tears. I can still hear her voice telling me those last words that cherished me the most. She was only nineteen when the weird disease killed her. The disease had slowly taken away her ability to live a normal life since 5 years back. In her early age, she was a very active and cheerful kid. She grew up as a beautiful teenage girl that was adorable to everyone. There was no sign telling that she is going to live her teenage life as a disable person.

Ally was three years older than me. I looked her up as a big sister which sometime makes me felt being bullied by her. Due to these never ending disputes we were not so close. I must admit that I was the one who took the distance from her during our ‘ceasefire’. But Ally was not a person who holds any grudges.  She took our feud as nothing more than a storm in a cup.  She would take my hands and held them both on her cheeks, looked into my eyes and said how much she loved and cared for me. I would then cried and fell into her arms. Ally had a fine personality that portrays her kind heart which pleased everyone. In school, she was an excellent student both in academics and sports. She always gets more attention from our parents, teachers and friends.

Before the disease ‘chooses’ her, she lives a normal life. Enjoying her teenage life. She has a lot of good friends and admirer. Her life was full of happiness. Two months before her 15th birthday. her life started to change. She started to act weird. She always fell down and hardly positioned herself and objects around her. She even lost some weight. But they didn’t bother us much. On her birthday, she fell again on her way to school. She was taken to the hospital. My mother began to feel something was not right with Ally. Curious, she asked the doctor to do medical check up on Ally. After a few medical check up the result of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) answered the question. Ally was diagnosed with Spinocerebellar Degeneration Disease. The cerebellum in her brain shrunk and the nerve cells in it degenerated slowly. It was a major shock to our family and disaster to Ally.

Knowing the fact, Ally locked herself up in the room crying the whole day imagining how her life would be. The progress of the disease was slow but it would get worst gradually. The disease was not curable. But, Ally was a very strong girl. After a while she began to regain her composure and live her life as usual. She was not giving up. She knew she must remain strong and determined to fight till her last breath. She had accepted the fact that one day she would fall into a deep sleep and never woke up again. I could see her pain was unbearable but she never let her tears falls in front of us. But I knew behind all that smiles, Ally life was full of fright and tears. She underwent intensive treatment programme at the hospital. Our family routine took a 360 turn. Mum was unable to cope up with the household chores anymore as she had to accompany Ally at the hospital. We all had to review our priorities and daily routines to address the new situation. Ally and I became close to each other. Day by day, her body slowly began to lose the strength to move around freely. I was devastated. I couldn’t stop crying each night thinking of Ally. I prayed to god to give a chance for her to recover and be with us.

Sometimes I feel like my body doesn't belong to me. What's happening to me?” Ally wrote in her dairy.

She realised she had lost certain control on her body. Her handwriting had also deteriorated. Her daily activities had also changed. Ally couldn’t participate in the school activities anymore. She needed the help of her friends around her to proceed with her needs.
As time passed, Ally became paralyzed. She was unable to do her daily chores. She had to move on the wheelchair. But that wouldn’t stop her from attending class. However things had changed. Friends started to distance themselves. Probably she was now a burden to some of them. She was no longer an adorable girl. She lost much of her weight and beauty.

Three months later, Ally was warded for further treatment. I could sense that she was not well. Father notified the school that Ally was not able to attend class anymore. I stayed at hospital to accompany her. She still had the will to talk and joke with me. We laughed and giggled at the memories that we had gone through together. After a week she warded, she was getting weak. She was unable to talk very well. I cried out loud holding her hand. She smiled. She hardly whispered to my ears “Thank you for every moment we shared together. Promise me that you will never cry again?” Those are last words from her before she went unconscious and died after two months comma.
Today, we gather with all family celebrating our parent’s anniversary with the absence of Ally. Ally was a very strong girl. Her absence changed our life. She has become an inspiration to us.

My Essay for Sharing :D : Sample Expository essay on THE INCREASING RATE OF ABSENTEEISM AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

@ 10:00 | 0 Comment [s]

Expository essay

THE INCREASING RATE OF ABSENTEEISM AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Absenteeism happen at all level. It has also become a menace that spread vigorously among universities students. Absenteeism in university can be defined as the escape from the responsibilities or duties such as lecture and tutorial without any leave. As university students, they are expected to be matured, independent and able to think and decide what is best for them as they hold the highest hope of their family and community to bring glory to the country and the family in future. However the increasing rate of absenteeism among universities students at the present time is serious concern. Therefore, absenteeism in university is not a small matter and it has to be dealt with at all cost. There are many factors that lead to the increasing of rate of the absenteeism among universities students, these include the students attitudes, the environmental condition and also the parents behaviours themselves.
It’s a fact that the student themselves are the main contributor to the increasing rate of absenteeism in the university. They take things for granted and developed a bad attitude toward their study. University students are usually among the teenagers. At this level their eagerness to enjoy life and have fun is at its maximum. They are in a dilemma between studies and enjoyments. They do not want to be tied up with lectures, assignments, deadlines and pressures. They are faced with a tough decision. Being on their own and away from the parents they always take the wrong decision which gives them a minute of enjoyment and a lifetime misery. Once the decision is made they would escape lectures and tutorial and provide excuses for their absenteeism. Laziness is another  factor  which contributed to the issue. This usually happen in the morning, especially among the boys. They prefer to get more sleep than get up to go to class. Other than that , the procrastination habits makes them have to stay up late at night doing homework and settling up assignment in the eleventh hour also can lead to this matter  as it usually can cause drowsiness in the morning. The drowsiness can make the students loss focus and emotionally imbalance to attend lectures and tutorial thus contributing to the absenteeism. In addition, some of students with low achievement, they tend to escape from the class when they can hardly deal with the subject. This consequently add to this matter.
Beside that, the environmental condition is also believed to affect one part as place of crime. The environmental condition that is uncomfortable too crowded with people or the imperfect infrastructures in the universities can also affect the students convenient to study. They chose to look for a more convenient than sitting in the lecture hall without the comfort and not fully focused ahead. This usually happen to the high achiever that need full concentration. These should be taken seriously and sufficiently addressed by the university in way to maintain the excellence of the students.
Though, parents as one of the contributors to the increasing rate of absenteeism in the universities cannot be overlooked. Busy working leads to lack of concern and focus to the children’s education. Some felt that if the children can continue their studies to universities is enough for them to give up responsibility towards their children’s education. As for the children, the parents’ lack of concern towards their studies provides an opportunity for them to be uncertain to take for granted the importance of education. Thus, causing them to not hesitate a bit to absenteeism. More to the point, there are some parents who pamper their children by providing too much wealth, freedom and trust. These effects by causing the children tend to ignore the education and rummaging fun.
None the less, the government are serious in tackling this issue as it has so much impact on the wellbeing of the nation building. Substantial sum of money are spent each year to provide financial assistance to the student to study in universities locally and abroad. As the student is not the sole contributor to this problem, it is the responsibility of all group to jointly find a way to handle this crisis. If the menace of absenteeism is not put to rest, all the effort and money are put to waste. The country’s vision 2020 to create a strong community with the high moral and values would remain a dream. Everyone has their role in achieving the country’s dream and aspiration. Don’t ask what the country can do for you but what you can do for the country.

Sample Essay Sharing : Write a story end with - To this day, i wondered if i did the right thing in accepting the offer.

@ 09:21 | 0 Comment [s]

Write a story that ends with:
To this day, I wondered if I did the right thing in accepting the offer.

It was 2 a.m in the morning when I received the life changing call that day. The ringing tone broke the silence of the night. With half opened eyes, I grabbed the phone. It was so weird to receive a phone call at the wee hours of the morning. I heard the voice at the other side of the line and ascertained who the caller was. It took me a few minutes to fully awake and recognized that the voice that talked on the other side of the line is my boss, Messy.
“Why do you call me in the middle of the night? There’s anything happened? I queried.
“Sorry for disturbing your sleep. We just received an important assignment. I need your help with this.” He said.
“It’s okay, what needs my professional skills?”  I joked.
“Ha ha” Messy chuckled and continued “just now a man with a black suit came to me and ask our organization to make a delivery. Tomorrow morning, come to my office and I will tell you more on this. Go back to your beauty sleep and see you tomorrow. Bye” said Messy before the line went dead.
I couldn’t get back to sleep. My mind at sea wondering what the new task would be. Tossed and turned, I gradually fell asleep.
On the next morning, the sun rises with a ball of fire. I woke up and got dressed. I wore my black silk suit, black long trousers and a black Italian leather shoes. I looked at the mirror and I liked my look.  I drove my black metallic Audi to my boss’s office.
Upon arrival, messy invited me to sit down and began to talk to me about the importance of this task. All I had to do is deliver the things from Messy’s client and safely send them to the recipient. My work seems so easy. Having done that, then my work was considered accomplished. In my line of duty, I have delivered many kind of things such as weapon, bombs and others. But this time, Messy warned me that I might encounter danger during my job because some people might try to stop me from delivering ‘the thing’ safely to the destination.
“Can you do it? You can refuse if you want to“Said Messy.
“Don’t worry. I can do it.”I answered confidently.
“So, your final decision is to accept the job right?
“Sure. I am a pro. You know I never let you down “I said.
Nodded, he handed me the things he received to me. It was a small grey box and a brown envelope. Before walked out, Messy reminded me about the rules of our profession:
1.       Never ask question, just deliver the things.
2.       Never open the packages from the clients for they are classified as confidential.
I looked at the envelope and realized that the destination is at Singapore. I booked the next flight and flew to Singapore. Following the address, it headed me to an unoccupied house. The neighbor said the owner is a scientist named Josh that moved away since few months back. Josh had an ex wife, Elli who lives in Australia. I was given her address in Australia.
I rushed to Australia to find Josh’s ex wife. Elli has a long blonde hair and a pair of blue eyes. She gave me Josh’s address and a piece of paper with a code on it. I cannot understand what the code means. As I left, I sent the code to my friend to decode it. After a while, he called me to say that the code actually represented a chemical thing. Curious, I risk my life and broke the rules. I opened the box and found a test tube containing a chemical and labeled ‘Biological DNA’.
I rushed to the address and found an old house. As I entered the house, I was surprised to saw many huge test tubes inside the building. As I approached nearer, I saw a naked human figure that looked like my son. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I convinced myself that it was not my son, Shane. It must be somebody else. It cracked my heart when I saw the label on the table. It was clearly written “Shane Devon”. NO! Impossible! My son is pursuing his studies in the Queensland University. But the truth was just under my nose. I cried so loud. I swore that I would bomb the whole building so that my son would not suffer after they changed him to a beast. He would be better off dead than living life as a beast which would kill people.
The bombs were put at every corner of the laboratory. Tears streamed down my cheek as I ignited the bomb. Finally the laboratory was destroyed and I lost my only child. Disconsolately, I went back to Malaysia. If only I didn’t pick up the phone that night, I wouldn’t know the truth. If only I refused to do the job before, I wouldn’t have to kill my only son with both my hand. To this day I wondered if I did the right thing in accepting the offer.

My Essay for Sharing :D : Sample Essay on - A Gift I Treasured

@ 09:16 | 0 Comment [s]

A GIFT I TREASURE

“I bet no one would ever believe anything I said. But I’m not lying. I’m telling the truth! I saw him... Not only him… I CAN REALLY SEE ‘THEM’..!!…..”

HI. MY NAME IS ANDY. I am eleven years old. I was raised up in an orphanage, 40 miles away from town. I have no friends or family. I never know who my parents or how they looked like. Nobody wanted to be my friend. It’s only me, in my world. I was not a favourite among the inmates. I was always out-of-the-way. I rarely went out to play like the other kids, for the reason that I was a sickly baby. I chose to lock up myself single-handedly in the room sketching on a white paper all day long. As a result, everyone called me a freak. Until one day, a life changing event happened to me.

I was on my way back from night class when i saw something moving in the corn farm near the orphanage. Curious, I sneaked between the grasses to see what’s inside. Shocked! I couldn’t move my body when I saw a gigantic strange object landed right in front of me. I was taken aback when the inexplicable object flashed a stream of light into my face and dazzled my vision. My eyes were hurt. I was blinded for a while. My head felt like it’s going to explode. I panicked and ran as fast as I could before I accidently tripped to the ground and out for the count.

Waking up the next morning, I was shocked to find myself in the middle of a messed corn farm. I ran to the orphanage and locked myself up in the room. I hid under the blanket. My body shaking and its temperature risen. I get mystified. I don’t know what’s happening. I walked to the bathroom, washed my face in the sink. I wanted to wash away all the petrified feeling I felt. I grabbed a towel besides and wiped my face. As I lifted my face to see the mirror, I saw a girl through the reflection on the mirror standing behind me with a long black hair covering up half of her face. I stunned! But when I turned back, she’s not there. That is the first time I saw such thing. However, it doesn’t stop there. Started from that moment, my everyday life surrounded with blurry images of terrifying entities moving around me. Luckily they never sought after me. I don’t know how I got this ability. But, it’s not a pleasant gift for me. Why me?

One day, I joined a scout camp in a jungle. On the first day while we were busy setting up our tents, there were 2 boys and a girl went to the jungle unaccompanied. They told the other campers that they were going out to look for ghost and spirits. However, they didn’t show up for hours. So, we split into a few groups to look for them. After almost one hour searching, the sky was getting darker. Suddenly, I saw a boy with complete attire walking alone straight to the forest. I believe that’s one of the missing boys. I shouted his name. He didn’t answer me. He glanced to me with his pale blue grey face before continue walking. I followed him till I reached a small river where I come across a dead body of a girl. I kicked in the teeth. I’m sure that’s the missing girl! I was so terrified. I kicked the ground and ran away back to the camp site to seek for help. I was so frightened that I forgot that I left that boy behind. When I reached the camp site, I saw all the missing campers were there, the two boys and the girl. No one died or even injured. I was startled. I thought that was the missing girl’s dead body I left a minute ago. Despite all that, I grabbed the companion’s hand and brought him to the place before. The dead body still there but the boy was no more. The police then came and blocked the area. I was surrounded by thousands of questions by the police and the campers. But in all the mess, the thing that puzzled in my mind was the boy. Who was the boy that I went after before? Where did he go?

With my entire mind at sea I walked back to the camp site. I stunned when I saw that creepy boy a few metres in front of me. He was staring at me. By then I realised that he’s not like the other kids. He’s not even wearing the same scout attire as we did. He was not one of our members. We stared at each other. I couldn’t move my body. I know he’s not alive. He’s a lost spirit that trapped in the forest. He must be someone from the previous campers who got lost and died. Then, who’s the dead girl? Could it be his friend trapped together? He brought me to the location before so that he can show me the unburied body because I’m the only one that could see him?

“Hey little boy, you’re the one who bumped into the dead body before, aren’t you? Could you tell me how did you found it?” Asked the police officer suddenly.

“He told me...” With full of frighten, I gathered all my strength lifting my finger pointing at the little boy.
                 “Who?’” curious, the officer asked.

                 That little boy...”
            “SITTING ON YOUR SHOULDER…”

My Essay for Sharing :D : Anita Desai - The Village by The Sea, Literary Critism

@ 09:14 | 0 Comment [s]

Literary Critism
The village by the sea is a masterpiece written by an Indian Novelist, the Emeritus John E. Burchard Professor of Humanities at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Anita Desai. Anita desai was born on 24 june 1935 by a Germany mother and a Bengali father. Able to speak in Bengali, Urdhu, English and hindi, she grew up surrounded by western literature and music until she was older that this was an anomaly in her world where she also learned the Eastern culture and customs. The village by the sea: an Indian family story is a novel for young people that was first published in London in 1982 is a story telling the reality life that happen in India. The story is based on the poverty, hardship and sorrow faced by a small rural community in India. Through this novel, Desai has won the annual Guardian Children’s Fiction; a once – in – a-lifetime book award was judge by the panel of British children’s writers.
The village by the sea is a story taking place in a small fishing village, Thul where the main resources for food supply and money of the villagers comes from the . The story is about a survival of an Indian family that consist of a very sick mother and a drunkard father that is unable to work due to his bad drinking habit, three sisters and a brother. The two younger sisters who are studying in school and an elder sister, who has stopped going to school due to economical problems, are now looking after their family. The younger brother feel responsible to be the head of family as he is the only man that is reliable in the family also stopped going to school due to the same reason and to look after their family. These two elder sister and brother becomes the sole food provider to the family. They did everything it takes to survive and meet their family needs. The only things they have are a small hut and a small piece of land which is not enough for them to make a living on. Their difficulties and struggles in surviving their life in such a young age make their life full with sorrows and obscurity.
Throughout my reading on this book, there are a few literary critism that are highlighted all through the plot development in this novel. One of them is economy.
As can be seen in the novel, the background of the novel is taking place in a fisherman village. Their financial and food supply resources of the villagers is definitely depending much on the sea compare to any other alternatives. The earnings from fishing activities have becoming the core income for their living. When this opportunity is taken away from them, they lost they way. They can’t think of any other way to earn for living. When Biju’s big boat was nearly ready to go out to the sea, a strange man’s news that it is useless since factories will be built by the government near the sea really breaks their heart as fishing will be very hard. Add to the depression, there will be no work opportunities offered open for them in the factories.  The other economical literary can be seen in the novel is the economy condition of the main character’s family. Their main financial resources are through fishing and farming. When their drunkard father sold away their fishing boat, cow and paddy field to pay his toddy debts, they lost they sources of financial. They couldn’t afford money for their books and school uniform as well as their basic needs.  As the other two siblings need to be educated, the other two elder siblings stopped going to school as to do their best to afford their younger sibling’s school needs.  Lila is practically become the mum and taking care of all the family while Hari digs holes in the back yard, sometimes goes fishing and works in the fields to earn for living.  They hardly have any money even to buy small cheap thing demands by their little siblings. He feels very responsible as the head of the family. This can be seen in the paragraph quoted below.
‘But how?’ Cried Lila. “We don't go to school any more, you and I. Only Bela and Kamal go - and next year we won't be able to buy them any new books. We hardly eat anything but this dry bread or dry rice, every day. There's hardly ever any money to buy anything with in the bazaar - only when we sell our coconuts to the Malabaris - The only time we eat fish is when you go fishing. Father never does and then mother: how will mother get well if she never gets any medicine? (Page 15, line 15 until 26)
The other literary critism is social.
In the society in the village is consisting of a community of people with low standard and uneducated environment. Their living condition of the villagers is having way lower standard to be compared to the city people. They have very less job opportunities for them to improve their life. There is no clean water, very poor health facilities and also having a low standard of schooling and many more. The difficulties in their life since a very young age and being surrounded by that un-developing life since their parents and ancestors causes them don’t have big dreams. They have got a small piece of land, a fishing boat a hut and nothing else. And at the same time they are having a very calm and relaxed type of life. The people are so simple. They have to work only season wise and have their daily rest very joyfully. They also tend to feel satisfied with what they have in hand.  They don’t have much motivation to get and changed to a better life.
It is also the society where the voice of people of lower standard rank is being ignored by the people at higher rank or authorities/ government. when the government plans to built a few factories in the village, the villagers gets angry and oppose strongly the plan as it will badly affect their economy and they will lost the source of financial. But no one is listening to their yelling. The government is implementing their master plan with force. This resulting to the owner of small farms and lands has to become laborer and worker in their own land while some other does other works. Ever since, their life take 360 degrees turn from calm and relax life to a hardworking and restless life. In this society also, people in city is seen as high standard and educated people besides having a distinguished feature. A city man claims as those who suppose to be smart an intelligent. Any categories out of this is considered as their opposite. This rank of people also likes to ridicule and pull the wool over the second rank category of people’s eyes.
In this story also, the society still believe in superstitious. When Lila’s mother’s illness getting worse, the younger sisters ran to the house next door to seek for help. But instead of looking for a doctor, she sent them the magic man to help on getting away the evil spirit. He always gives treatment for their boils, aches and fevers. He is also known to perform special puja for those who are too ill to benefits from his powders- the mad, the unhappy and the dying. This society belief can be seen in page 74 lines 9 until 15.
‘‘I’ll tell you what. I heard the old man who came to the village with his cow blowing his horn and banging his drum early this morning. He can’t have gone far. I’ll send him to you. He has good herbs, powders and barks. Go and tell Lila.”.
