THE INCREASING RATE OF ABSENTEEISM AMONG
UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
Absenteeism
happen at all level. It has also become a menace that spread vigorously among
universities students. Absenteeism in university can be defined as the escape from the
responsibilities or duties such as lecture and tutorial without any leave. As
university students, they are expected to be matured, independent and able to
think and decide what is best for them as they hold the highest hope of their
family and community to bring glory to the country and the family in future.
However the increasing rate of absenteeism among universities students at the
present time is serious concern. Therefore, absenteeism in university is not a
small matter and it has to be dealt with at all cost. There are many factors
that lead to the increasing of rate of the absenteeism among universities
students, these include the students attitudes, the environmental condition and
also the parents behaviours themselves.
It’s
a fact that the student themselves are the main contributor to the increasing
rate of absenteeism in the university. They take things for granted and
developed a bad attitude toward their study. University students are usually
among the teenagers. At this level their eagerness to enjoy life and have fun
is at its maximum. They are in a dilemma between studies and enjoyments. They
do not want to be tied up with lectures, assignments, deadlines and pressures.
They are faced with a tough decision. Being on their own and away from the
parents they always take the wrong decision which gives them a minute of
enjoyment and a lifetime misery. Once the decision is made they would escape
lectures and tutorial and provide excuses for their absenteeism. Laziness is
another factor which contributed to the issue. This usually
happen in the morning, especially among the boys. They prefer to get more sleep
than get up to go to class. Other than that , the procrastination habits makes
them have to stay up late at night doing homework and settling up assignment in
the eleventh hour also can lead to this matter
as it usually can cause drowsiness in the morning. The drowsiness can
make the students loss focus and emotionally imbalance to attend lectures and
tutorial thus contributing to the absenteeism. In addition, some of students
with low achievement, they tend to escape from the class when they can hardly
deal with the subject. This consequently add to this matter.
Beside
that, the environmental condition is also believed to affect one part as place
of crime. The environmental condition that is uncomfortable too crowded with
people or the imperfect infrastructures in the universities can also affect the
students convenient to study. They chose to look for a more convenient than sitting in the lecture hall without the comfort and not fully focused ahead. This usually happen to the high achiever that need
full concentration. These should be taken seriously and sufficiently addressed
by the university in way to maintain the excellence of the students.
Though,
parents as one of the contributors to the increasing rate of absenteeism in the
universities cannot be overlooked. Busy working leads to lack of concern and
focus to the children’s education. Some felt that if the children can continue
their studies to universities is enough for them to give up responsibility
towards their children’s education. As for the children, the parents’ lack of
concern towards their studies provides an opportunity for them to be uncertain
to take for granted the importance of education. Thus, causing them to not
hesitate a bit to absenteeism. More to the point, there are some parents who
pamper their children by providing too much wealth, freedom and trust. These
effects by causing the children tend to ignore the education and rummaging fun.
None
the less, the government are
serious in tackling this issue as it has so much impact on the wellbeing of the
nation building. Substantial sum of money are spent each year to provide
financial assistance to the student to study in universities locally and
abroad. As the student is not the sole contributor to this problem, it is the
responsibility of all group to jointly find a way to handle this crisis. If the
menace of absenteeism is not put to rest, all the effort and money are put to
waste. The country’s vision 2020 to create a strong community with the high
moral and values would remain a dream. Everyone has their role in achieving the
country’s dream and aspiration. Don’t ask what the country can do for you but
what you can do for the country.
